Groom's cakes were my favorite part about going to weddings growing up. Maybe it had something to do with them usually being a yummy, delicious chocolate cake, as opposed to the traditional vanilla cake that was a bride's cake. But let's be honest, I never forgo'd the bride's cake because well, it's cake and this girl has always appreciated ALL the sweet things life has to offer. The groom's cake however, is what made the reception in my eyes. My favorite of all time was one that was all chocolate (of course) and was covered on all sides by chocolate covered strawberries! Man it was SO GOOD!
So that was the 90's and early 2000's, let's talk about now. 2017. The question is, "Are groom's cakes still a thing or no?" I think the answer is yes... but only in certain circumstances. Traditional groom's cakes are out, bye-bye plain chocolate cake. What is in and most certainly a thing, is when your groom has a passion for something or a specific hobby and his bride surprises him with a cake that is solely personal to his love for whatever it may be. It can be anything from rock climbing to hot sauce (shout out to Abby and Josh and Mallory and Austin!) and anything in between. Your guests should be able to walk by it and go "Yep, thats SO John! He is going to love that cake!"
If your man doesn't have a distinguishing hobby or passion that you can make into a cake and surprise him with at the reception, but he does love donuts... DO THAT!! Set up and give him a donut bar! The new trend is to incorporate other desserts into the wedding reception, why not showcase your fiancés favorite sweet treats? It can be anything from pies or cobblers, to Little Debbies or Oreos cookies. And on top of giving your new husband that special surprise, your guests will be excited for any dessert addition on top of the traditional brides cake...it's a win win in my book!
Now I'm not saying you can't do the traditional chocolate groom's cake. If that's your man's dessert of choice, then go for it! Get that chocolate cake! If it's personal and specific to him, then that is what matters and the whole point of a groom's cake. That is what make's each and every groom's cake OR dessert special and unique...that it is something that he would like or want if he could pick it out himself!
